Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the WIC Project Director, the WIC Nutrition Assistant 2 provides nutrition assessments, counseling and group education for WIC program participants as an Infant Feeding Specialist.

Specific Responsibilities:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide nutrition counseling and breastfeeding support for moderate risk participants, according to agency nutrition education services plan. Document education provided in ISIS.

  1. Screen WIC applicants/participants for nutrition risk factors and determine eligibility for program benefits using the Integrated Statewide Information System (ISIS). Update nutrition education plan in ISIS, as needed. Complete all ISIS and manual documentation. Use ISIS backup system, when needed.  15%
  2. Provide group nutrition education for participants as part of their secondary nutrition education contact. Document education provided in ISIS. Prepare to lead group education by obtaining and reading lesson plans as well as using acquired Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach skills. Obtain all materials needed for groups and prepare room. 15%
  3. Prescribe appropriate food instruments according to WIC Program Manual. Educate participants on WIC check use and document in ISIS.  Participate in ongoing, advanced nutrition education. 5%
  4. Assist in distributing food instruments, scheduling, and assisting clients at reception desk and on telephone, as needed. Less than 5%
  5. Perform various clerical duties such as filing, photocopying, and typing. File all client records by end of day. Less than 5%

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Cont.):

Language specific:

  1. Maintain adequate stock of educational materials and supplies for Spanish or Vietnamese-speaking clients. Translate materials to Spanish or Vietnamese, as needed.  Respond to Spanish or Vietnamese speaking participant calls. 5%
  2. Assist Office Manager in maintaining the orderliness of the WIC offices. Maintain an adequate stock of supplies and forms. Less than 5%

 

  1. Complete “primary responsible” duties and refer duties to other available staff if unable to complete on time. Less than 5%

4.      Complete other duties as requested by Project Director (Outreach, additional projects, etc.).

5.       Arrive and be prepared to begin work at 8:30.

  1. Attend staff meetings and workshops as requested by Project Director.
  2. The employee shall work well under pressure, meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines.
  3. The employee shall at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, and clients.

Qualifications:

  1. BA or BS degree required from an accredited four-year college or university
  2. Certification as a WNA in the State of California
  3. One year experience as a certified WNA 1
  4. Certified Lactation Educator          
  5. Bi-lingual skills in English, Spanish or Vietnamese
  6. Annual participation in CWA training and/or breastfeeding training
  7. Certification in Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach Program
  8. Excellent verbal and written skills in English, Spanish or Vietnamese;
  9. Able to perform work duties efficiently, accurately and effectively;
  10. Able to work well with the public and as part of a health promotion team;
  11. Prefer prior experience using computers;
  12. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds.
